Lesson Focus: Explore solar and wind as options for generating electricity and investigate the challenges of solar and wind generation.
S6E6. Obtain, evaluate and communicate information about the uses and conservation of various natural resources and how they impact the earth.
- a. Ask questions to determine the differences between renewable/sustainable energy resources (e.g.,hydro, solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, biomass) and nonrenewable energy resources (e.g.,nuclear: uranium; fossil fuels: oil, coal and natural gas), and how they are used in our everyday lives.
Key Concepts:
- Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources
- Sun as an Energy Source
- Energy Transformation
- Wind Energy and Generation
- Energy Efficiency
- Careers in Energy
Class Activities
Lesson Objectives
- Identify renewable and non-renewable resources.
- Explain the role of the sun as a major source of energy on the earth.
- Explain how wind is generated, and how its energy is transformed.
- Define kinetic energy.
- Describe how wind is used to generate electricity.
- List the reasons wind and solar power are good options for electricity generation.
- Explain the challenges faced by wind and solar generation today.
Lesson considerations:
The updated 6th grade learning standard is asking students to evaluate, and communication ideas concerning natural resources in a way that our current lesson does not address.
The current lesson aligns with a learning standard that focuses on identifying renewables and non-renewable resources. As an organization, I recommend that review the current 6th grade lesson to determine how well it connects to updated Standards of Excellence.
Part 1: Resource Types
Identify and explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources
Part 2: Solar, Wind, and Electricity Generation
Materials:
- Snap CircuitsĀ® Green kits with instructions
- Activity sheet: Energy Resources
- Graphic organizer
