Devon Fischer loves ice cream and ice hockey. A big-time Pittsburgh Penguins fan, she even named her dog Crosby after team captain Sidney Crosby.
More than anything, though, she loves to teach, most recently instructing high school Spanish at Brookwood High School in Snellville. For Devon, the goal is to empower and prepare her students for any opportunity that awaits them on the other side of the classroom door.
“My role as a teacher is to bridge the connection between classroom learning and real-world uses, helping my students understand how what they are learning can be applied to their daily lives,” says Devon.
Devon started her educator journey in remote southern Chile, helping K-8th grade students turn language barriers into stepping stones. “Learning is a bridge to opportunity. In Chile, my older students knew that speaking English would help them get jobs and postsecondary opportunities in bigger cities after high school,” she explains.
She delivers exciting energy efficiency and STEM lessons in Banks County, Barrow, Clarke, Commerce City, Elbert, Franklin, Gainesville City, Greene, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson City, Madison, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Social Circle City, Stephens, and Walton counties.
In her free time, Devon enjoys reading, working on the latest DIY inspiration, or preparing to cross the finish line of her fourteenth marathon.
She’ll cross a stage soon, too. Devon is completing her PhD in Linguistics at the University of Georgia—where she also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and Spanish and Master’s in Hispanic Linguistics.
Of course, she loves the Bulldogs. But on football Saturdays, you might find Devon in Athens cheering for the… Buckeyes? Yes, that’s right. Her Ohio roots mean family first, Dawgs second.
